Bringing a Vision to Life- Custom Wrought Iron Door with Hand Crafted Bronze Medallion

A door doesn’t have to be just a door.  Your entryway is the eye to your home, and it can be used to express your own unique personal style and can also be utilized as a functional work of art.  We take pride in our ability to hear a customer’s vision for their entryway and utilize our resources and talents to bring that vision to reality.   Recently, a customer came to us with a specific idea for her front door.  She was inspired by a bronze compass rose that she saw at the Sea Pines Resort, and had the idea to incorporate that compass into her front door design.

Of course, we were thrilled with the opportunity to not only help her bring her vision to life, but also to work hand in hand with a talented artist.  Even though our customer lives in Florida we knew our DP70, Florida rated, 48″ by 120″ wrought iron doors would withstand Florida’s intense and unpredictable weather.  We adjusted the wrought iron scrolling design to compliment the compass and fleur de lis medallion, and our customer hired sculptor David Ponsler to recreate the compass rose out of bronze metal.  David is an incredible artist, and you can click here to see a YouTube video of him at work.  He handcrafted the medallion out of hammered bronze, and it came out perfect!

We hand forged the compass in place within the wrought iron scrolling on the door.

Once the compass was secure, it was time for the door to be painted and sealed.

This is what the door looked like right before it was packaged up and shipped to the customer.  The glass will be shipped separately and will be installed when the door is installed on the home.  Watch our Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ feeds for a completed picture of this door installed on our customer’s custom home.  We think the door came out fantastic!  What do you think?  Leave us a comment below and tell us what you would you incorporate into your design if you could create your own custom dream door!

Decorating Your Front Door for Halloween

It’s that time of year again!  Pumpkin spice lattes are back at our favorite coffee joints, fall scented candles fill our homes with the delightful smells of cinnamon and apples, and our children start counting down the days until they can don superhero and princess costumes, proudly walk their neighborhood, and fill up empty bags with candy.

But here in the South, Halloween isn’t just about trick or treating.  Neighborhoods, churches, and schools use this spooky holiday to come together and celebrate family, friends and fun.  It is not uncommon to drive through neighborhoods on Halloween night and see families sitting outside on lawn chairs, chatting and laughing with their neighbors and friends, while children play pretend superhero and fairy tale games nearby.

Considering this dynamic, it doesn’t come as a surprise to see entire communities with front doors elaborately decorated for the holiday, each door displaying an exciting Halloween theme.  The only thing better than a gorgeous front door, is a gorgeous front door dressed up for a holiday.  In celebration of the season, we thought it would be fun to put together a list of some of our favorite Halloween decorated entryways.

These homeowners dressed up their six lite single entry wood door with elaborate ornaments and decorations.  We think it has a bit of a Mardi Gras feel to it.

It didn’t take much to jazz up this gorgeous custom wrought iron double entry door for the holiday.

These homeowners kept it classy and oh so Edgar Allen Poe by decorating their French Acadian style wood door with ravens, skeletons and white pumpkins.

These Halloween fans are keeping it simple with a custom wreath and pumpkin topiaries, letting their gorgeous wood with iron front door do all the talking.

Let’s end our list with a bang!  It must have taken some time for the family behind these leaded glass double entry wood doors to put together this Halloween masterpiece.  Look at all the intricate details!

Did you decorate your front door for Halloween?  If so, we’d love to see it!  Snap a quick photo and post it to our Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ page, and show off your own unique door dress up style.

Custom Wrought Iron Transom Install

Doors by Design recently installed this custom, wrought iron door in a beautiful new construction home.  Getting the door in was the easy part.  Here’s another inside look at the manpower it takes to get the heavy, iron transom in place.

Image

Doors installed!  That was the easy part.

Image

Time to rig up some scaffolding.

Image

It takes four men to haul the transom up the scaffolding and set it in place.

Image

And walla!  There are still steps that need to be completed before this installation is complete (glass, trim, seal) but the hardest part is done.

Image

It seems that the more complicated the install, the more beautiful the pay off, and this custom iron door was no exception.
